Edit 12/28: All contests have been extended until the New Years (Jan. 1st)! Isn't that fab? Well, I think it is, I'm looking forward to reading everything you throw at us. Oh, and be sure to wish our lovely leader well! She hasn't been feeling well again, the poor dear.

No sooner had I posted my journal of sorry, but this brand spanking new journal of CONTEST and READING is posted ^_^ But who is really going to complain about that.

To make up for my lengthy absence I am launching the contest that I have been excited about for weeks, since *IrrevocableFate and I thought it up.

The 12 Days of Literati

On the 1st day of Christmas, my true love gave to me... The basis of this contest is devilishly simple. I want you to submit, 12 pieces of written work. Sounds easy enough, but as with everything in life there are some fairly strict guidelines I need you to adhere to.

These 12 pieces may be old, or written new for the contest, it doesn't matter.
The 12 pieces must have a fairly even split of poetry to prose (and also include at least one piece of non fiction). For help on what constitutes 'non fiction' or just to help expand your repertoire then have a look at Lovetodeviate's resource central. [link]
The key to this contest is variety I do not want to read 6 poems about your cat and 6 pieces of prose about your boyfriend. That is not interesting.
Please give them original titles eg titles that relate to the piece and not 'Literati Contest Entry 9' or something like that.
The 12 pieces do not have to be themed around The 12 Days of Christmas (that was just an amusing theme) in fact, I'd prefer if it wasn't, this is about your overall talent, rather than conforming to some bizarre theme.

Does that seem simple enough? If I have omitted a glaringly obvious point, feel free to ask, I am still a little doped up, not quite my super sharp self.


How to Enter

Post all 12 pieces up on dA, either as a deviation or a scrap, I don't mind.
Make a list of 12 links in a note and send it to me. This is where you decide the order of the pieces.
I will try and find some clever way of displaying the entries.
Please only use polished and "perfect" pieces - by that I mean work that you think is the best it can be.
The deadline for this contest is December 24th 2008 (at the usual time of midnight GMT.) The deadline has been extended until January 1st!


What Do I Win?!

Everyone's favourite bit ... I decided that since this is Christmas, I would offer something that any writer would love: the chance to see their text in print.

Using the almighty power of *Sakanoue's lulu account, we are able to create a beautiful, hardcover, full colour creation. This is the reason I want your pieces to be at a stage where you are completely happy with them, so they can be published.

The Literati Book Club II

I had a couple of book idea planned following the first book, but with Christmas fast approaching I simply have to use this book as fodder for the Christmas Book Club.

The book is... The Christmas Mystery by Jostien Gaarder

I think this man is an absolute legend, all his works are translated from his native Norwegian, but I don't feel much is lost in translation. All his works have completely opened my eyes to lots of things, but this one was my first and one of my favourites. It is a totally different slant on the Christmas story...

sorry I must stop otherwise there will be no point in us discussing the book some time in the new year. Needless to say I love it and I want you guys to rush off and get your teeth into it.

We will meet again to discuss it after new years, when I know I am free. Anyone who wants to take part should note me and I shall mention them below.

The Prompt Contest

Because a few of you have requested a smaller contest to tide you over the Xmas holidays and I feel kinda sad that the first page of prompts don't get as much love as they need. Then I have decided to begin this little contest...

Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed...

I am so sorry chaps for my lengthy and unscheduled absence from my lovely Literati. I have been incredibly ill over the past few weeks, my flu developed into something more sinister, I've been in and out of hospital and on antibiotics etc. I am so sorry not to be in contact, but I haven't even been writing, let alone had a chance to update the club. I really am sorry.

However I am back and so annoyed as how much of the Literati Winter Festival I am having to cut because of divine intervention...

I promise to make it up to you with the final two points of the festival: The Literati Xmas Party and The Literati Book Club

Both of these shall begin on December 1st 2008 and should run until about Christmas time...

As for the daily prompts I am sorry to have deprived you of your little chunks of daily inspiration. I promise to get right back onto updating those every day now.

Fear not I still have my Literati Comrades notes, and I intend to sort out a few more pairings soon. I would love to hear how any of you guys are getting on with the partners you have been assigned so far.

Again, I am amazingly sorry for my absence. I shall make every effort to get this wonderful club back on track again.

I know I may have confused many of you with my early announcement of our planned celebrations. However I figured that since today Tuesday October 7 marks six months of the glorious Literati. Therefore I would like to take this opportunity to announce the beginning of The Literati Winter Festival

I know several of you have mentioned that it may not yet be winter where you are. However this morning there was frost of the inside of my window and I have the flu. This means that it is officially winter for me ^_^

And so, what does The Literati Winter Festival consist of then? Everything!

Starting today is our next big contest The Literati Musical…

This was an idea that several of you came out with, the idea of using music as inspiration to create a new piece of literature. So here is your chance…

How to Enter

Note *The-Literati with your intention to take part.
I will note you back with a song that you are to use in your entry, (those are the two you must use.)
Be sure to mention both this contest and the song you were assigned.
Send me a note with a link to your piece when you have posted it with the title The Literati Musical.
Open for any Literati member to enter.


Rules

You may only use the song that you have been assigned. It’s super easy to write a piece based around a song you know and love. A new song will give you a chance to explore new terrain and all that ^_^
It can be poetry or prose – The Literati do not discriminate!
The contest will end on November 1st 2008 at midnight. GMT

Judging

Judges -

Fate will be judging for how well the song is integrated lyrically, and I will be judging how the mood, tone and style of the song is used.
Of course we also want pieces of the highest literary quality, nothing short of the best ^_^

As a side note, I would also like to announce a little side contest to find The Literati a new ID.

It must be:
Tasteful, nothing too tacky or ridiculous.
In the club colours of light green (my favourite colour) and white – for a few colour pointers take a look at the existing ID
All entries to be noted to *The-Literati with the title Literati ID Contest.
The winning entry will be used as the new ID and the creator will be lauded as the creative genius they are.
Please be creative, there are no criteria for a winner, just what I feel encapsulates the spirit of The Literati the best. Go for it ^_^
A new ID might also be used in an adcast campaign, if I can cough up the cash.
